Alta Vista was named Missouri Charter School of the Year in 2013. Students, staff, and parents say they’ve worked hard and deserve this title.

“Being Missouri charter school of the year means,” Principal Ed Mendez said.

“Throughout the years the teachers have prepared the students to improve in their test scores, the students have also put in their full effort to make this happen,” a teacher who wishes to remain anonymous said.

Some parents believe it’s a good thing for the school, students and staff.

“I’m happy that my daughters are going to a school that has won Missouri Charter School of the Year, and the teachers seem to be doing their job, and my kids can get a good education,” a parent who wishes to remain anonymous said.

Additionally, students also agree that this title pushes them to do bigger and better things.

“It feels good to know we’re Missouri Charter School of the Year, because it mean I’m in one of the best schools in the state,” senior Maryssa Clemens said.

“There has always been good and helpful teachers that push us to do better,” Clemens said.

According to the parents and students, there has been a change through out the years they’ve been a part of Alta Vista that helped to win this title.

“The school has become stricter, and the test scores have improved. Also, tutoring, grindstone and cornerstone [have ] helped tremendously,” a parent who wishes to remain anonymous said.

“The school is more strict than what it was a couple years ago, but it only helps students focus more on their education,” senior Kevin Moyer said.

And according to the vision of the school, “Alta Vista will empower students to succeed in college and in their chosen professions and will prepare them to be productive members in the community.”

“Alta Vista has proved that the vision can be accomplished and that this title of Missouri Charter School of the Year is only a step closer to achieving it,” Clemens said.
