New year, new STUCO

Selena Aguilera, Aztec Voice

Ever since school started, some students have been looking forward to who would be the Student Council (STUCO) of 2016-2017. Aug. 29-Sept. 2 was a week of voting and opinions on the students running for STUCO. (See the end of this article for the election results.)

Every student has their own feeling on the Student Council; some don’t care and some do. But since this is an important week for the student body and the Student Council runners-up, things are being taken more seriously.

This year, the stakes are high for who will make the Student Council: there are many talented students with many ideas to help the school, but who will win?

Here is what some of the Student Council runners-up had to say:

Junior Clara Moran,running for president:

Question: What made you decide to run for Student Council?

Answer: “I decided to run because I feel that the school has a lack of leadership and I feel like I can help influence better authority.”

Junior Marquan Pennington:

Q: What do you hope to change or keep for the school?

A: “CHARACTER.”

Q: What do you hope to gain for yourself and the school?

A: More communication among the students, staff, parents and Guadalupe Centers. More clubs so as to have more students involved in extracurricular activities. And Culture Awareness because I feel like the school has little understanding of it.”

Q: What do you want to tell the AV students?

A: “Do what you gotta do.”

Junior Alexander Gloria, running for class representative:

Q: What made you decide to run for Student Council?

A: “I actually wanted to try and help the community as best of my abilities.”

Q: What do you want to change or keep?

A: “I wanna try change the paint of the school classrooms because it should inspire creativity, and it’s important to have that and make us feel more comfortable.”

Q: What do you hope to gain for yourself or the school”

A: “I want to help the school to be better since we have a new name; we should have a new image.”

Q: What do you want to say to the AV Students?

A: “What’s up? How is your day going? If you wanna talk, come talk to me.”

And then there are the students who have their own points of view and opinions on STUCO. Each grade is now deciding whether to vote for their friends or the ones who are showing potential to be in STUCO.

Sophomore Alejandra Tarango had this to say:

Q: Who do you think could actually make a difference among those running for your class?

A: “I say Madhavi Madrid because she is focused on what she is doing and looks more responsible of her stuff.”

Q: Who are you voting for and why?

A: “I am planning to vote for Madhavi and Samantha: Madhavi because of her focus and Samantha because she is someone I have known for a long time and someone I know I can trust.”

Q: What changes do you want to see at school?

A: “The food! And the uniforms.”

And also there are those who hope that the Student Council take things more seriously this year,

Junior Erika Lara Martinez had this to say:

Q: Who do you think could actually make a difference among those running for your class?

A: “I say Samantha Carmona and Clara Moran because they are the ones who are more involved in school activities and are more involved in the community.”

Q: Who are you voting for and why?

A: “I am voting for Samantha because I love her personality and the way she handles things in a mature way.”

Q: What changes do you want to see this year?

A: “I want people to actually do their work and stop fooling around because this is high school and we need to take our education more seriously now. We are young adults and should act like it.”
